Early Life and Education
Born in 1986 in Serekunda, The Gambia, Talib Ahmed Bensouda is the son of Amie Bensouda, a prominent Gambian lawyer and former Attorney General, and Ahmed Bensouda, a former government official. He pursued higher education in Canada, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Communication Technology from the University of Toronto in 2007.
Professional Background
Before entering politics, Bensouda gained experience in various sectors. He worked in the insurance industry, holding positions such as Marketing Manager at Takaful Gambia Limited. He also ventured into entrepreneurship, founding Safari Trading, a company that developed and marketed hygiene products.
Political Career
In May 2018, at the age of 31, Bensouda was elected as the Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, becoming the youngest mayor in Gambian history. He was re-elected for a second term in May 2023.
Key Initiatives and Achievements
Waste Management: Launched the “Mbalit” project, Kanifing’s first municipal waste collection service, improving sanitation and reducing illegal dumpsites.
Environmental Transformation: Secured a €3 million grant from the European Union for the Kanifing Environmental Transformation Programme (KETP), promoting recycling, green spaces, and sustainable living practices.
Infrastructure Development: Initiated the construction of the municipality’s first public library and innovation hub, aiming to enhance educational resources and innovation.
Financial Reforms: Implemented improved financial controls and restructured council operations, resulting in doubled revenue for the council.
Recognition
Bensouda’s leadership and commitment to sustainable urban development have earned him recognition, including a nomination for the Future Leaders Invitation Programme (PIPA).
